Bo Bo's Vice runs like his sire in NY Stallion
Cab Calloway
Story
courtesy of http://www.nybreds.com
Even though his first win had been only 18 days earlier
on a "good" Belmont track, James Edwards' homebred
BO BO'S VICE was the 2.25-to-1 second choice in Belmont's
$250,000 New York Stallion Cab Calloway Stakes for New
York-conceived three-year-olds at a one-turn mile and
a sixteenth on Sunday. For half a mile in his second consecutive
outing under jockey Jorge Chavez, that assessment looked
optimistic, as the bay gelding trailed the field while
favored Sway of Passion (1.30-to-1) set the pace, but
then he rallied wide and looked just like his sire, New
York stallion Raffie's Majesty. Fifth with five-sixteenths
of a mile to go, Bo Bo's Vice started picking off his
rivals, getting up on the outside of 4.30-to-1 third choice
High Priced to win by a length and a half, with the four
other starters behind High Priced stretched out another
10 lengths. It was the second consecutive score on a wet
track for Bo Bo's Vice, although the New York-bred had
finished first on a fast track at Belmont on May 4, when
he was disqualified and placed third for lugging in.
"When I asked him, he responded and just took off,"
observed Chavez . "Last time I rode him, he had more
of a kick, but this was enough for today. I rode his daddy
in the Travers," added Chavez in reference to the
third-place near miss by New York-bred Raffie's Majesty
in Saratoga's 1998 Travers Stakes.
Winning trainer Harold James Bond, a four-time New York
Thoroughbred Breeders Trainer of the Year, had saddled
Raffie's Majesty for the 1998 Travers, in which the New
York-bred had rallied wide to finish in a near dead heat
with Coronado's Quest and Victory Gallop. Bond indicated
that Bo Bo's Vice might have a promising future: "I
was disappointed with the DQ (disqualification) last month,
but that education probably helped him. He's just like
his daddy. He is a big, strong horse -- his mare [Bo Bo's
Sister, by Talc] is a big mare -- and he has had four
big races now. We'll bring him to Saratoga, give him a
little time and look at races like the New York Derby
and the Albany (Saratoga Race Course, $150,000, Wednesday,
August 20). Hopefully, he'll turn out to be something
special."
The victory sent the earnings for Bo Bo's Vice soaring
by $150,000 to $181,080, giving him a record of 2 - 0
- 1 in only four starts -- the first of which was on April
5 at Aqueduct. It also qualified Edwards, who bred Bo
Bo's Vice in the name of his CBF Corporation, for the
maximum $10,000 breeder award. Bo Bo's Vice and New York
Stallion Statue of Liberty Stakes winner Beautiful America
were both conceived at The Stallion Park in Millbrook,
which Edwards owns.
The Cab Calloway division of the New York Stallion Stakes
Series -- like the Statue of Liberty -- is a new event
on the schedule of the New York Racing Association (NYRA),
which also has increased purses for Aqueduct's Times Square
and Park Avenue Stallion Stakes divisions from $100,000
to $150,000 each. Qualifying for the maximum $10,000 stallion
award was the partnership that owns Raffie's Majesty (Cormorant
- Raffinierte, by Surumu), who was voted Champion New
York-Bred Three-Year-Old Male for 1998 by the New York
Thoroughbred Breeders Association. That partnership, headed
by Henry Prieger of Prantlack Farm in Stanfordville, who
bred and raced Raffie's Majesty, is named Four Partners
Stable. Bo Bo's Vice is among four
winners in 2003 from a total of five starters out of the
first crop of Raffie's Majesty.
