Greeley’s Galaxy, the 2005 Illinois Derby (G2) winner, will begin his stallion career in 2007 at Susan and Howard Kaskel’s SugarMaple Farm in Poughquag, New York.
The four-year-old Mr. Greeley colt out of Ascot Starre, by Ascot Knight, will stand for $7,500. Greeley’s Galaxy won the Illinois Derby by 9 1⁄2 lengths in his stakes debut for owner B. Wayne Hughes and trainer Warren Stute. He finished unplaced in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) and third to Unbridled Energy in the 2006 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2).
“Greeley’s Galaxy had exceptional speed which he carried two
turns,” Sugar Maple manager Dan Hayden said. “Anyone who saw
his effort in the Illinois Derby had to be impressed by the way he
dominated that field. He just took charge of a major prep for the
Kentucky Derby, pouring it on in the stretch to win by nearly ten
lengths. He is also by Mr. Greeley, the sire of El Corredor, one of
the leading and most promising young stallions in Kentucky.”
Bred by Runnymede Farm Inc., Catesby Clay, and Joseph and Wendy
Clay, Greeley’s Galaxy won four of 14 career starts and earned $446,222.
